Outstanding teaching assistant wins national award

A Yorkshire teaching assistant is celebrating after scooping a national award.

HLTA national award Deborah Carter, who works at Austhorpe Primary School in Leeds, has been named National Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) of the Year.

She faced competition from across the country, but was selected for the prestigious award by Dr Helen Benstead, chair of the HLTA National Assessment Partnership.

Earlier this year, Deborah was named the 2018 Yorkshire and Humber regional HLTA of the Year.

The awards for outstanding HLTAs were introduced in 2010 by Carnegie Leaders in Learning, based at Leeds Beckett University, along with Leeds Trinity University, Northumbria University and Sheffield Hallam University.

They acknowledge excellence in advancing the learning of pupils, working effectively as part of the school community and bringing expertise to the staff team.

Deborah picked up her national award from Johnny Mercer MP during a ceremony in London.
